Arctic Animals—Fun Facts and Stories (Webinar)
Thanks to those families who attended our Arctic Animals webinar on January 4 at 5 pm EST. If you couldn't attend live, we've got you. Please see the recording and resources below.
As a celebration of the end of our downtown Florence (Massachusetts) StoryWalk of Jan Brett's new book, Cozy, we are celebrating all things Arctic! But you don't need to have participated in the StoryWalk to attend.
Open to all!
Come and talk to award-winning educator and 2016 Colorado Teacher of the Year Leticia Ingram about her journey to the Arctic as a National Geographic Grosvenor Fellow. Then meet her daughter, Savanah Elliot, who is currently a dietetic intern living just south of the Arctic Circle in Alaska (and ask her about the moose who walk through her yard every day!).
Leticia and Savanah will share their first-hand experiences with Arctic Animals, including some amazing photos. Then they'll field questions from the audience. Ask an expert in this kid-friendly event.
Both Leticia and Savanah work with the Arctic Angels, a group of inspiring young women (ages 9-30) who are committed to protecting our global commons through an intergenerational action network. Donations made to this event will go to support the work of the Arctic Angels.
This virtual talk is for families and kids of all ages.
About the speakers:
Leticia Guzman Ingram is currently an education consultant for Global Choices/Arctic Angels. In the last few years, she built the English Language Development (ELD) Newcomer Program at Basalt High School and was passionate about advocating for her students. In 2016, Leticia was selected as Colorado Teacher of the Year by the Colorado Department of Education, the Virginia French Allen Award for Excellence in Teaching and was selected ELD Colorado Teacher of the Year. She has also received numerous educational opportunities including traveling to Finland, China, Cambodia, the Gambia, and The Hague. Leticia was also a member of The Aspen Institute's National Commission on Social, Emotional, and Academic Development. She has presented numerous times that include a session before a congressional briefing on education and at the Aspen Ideas Festival. Leticia was also honored to be a 2019 National Geographic Grosvenor Fellow and studied in the Arctic. She is currently an education doctoral candidate at Abilene Christian University and also teaches as an adjunct professor at Colorado Mountain College.
From Savanah Elliot: Growing up in a small Colorado mountain town helped build my appreciation for the outdoors. I have always loved skiing, hiking, and camping, and have more recently found a passion for backcountry snowmobiling. Last December, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Colorado State University with a B.S. in Nutrition and Food Science. In August of 2020, I moved to Anchorage, Alaska, just south of the Arctic Circle, to start a dietetic internship with a concentration in Alaska Native culture and the Alaska healthcare delivery system. While living in Alaska, I have been amazed by the sheer scale of beauty in the natural world that is right outside my front door. I have taken full advantage of this while adjusting to a new climate, changing daylight, and a wide variety of wildlife.

December Downtown Florence StoryWalk: Jan Brett's Cozy
A winter StoryWalk is happening in downtown Florence!
Our first StoryWalk was so much fun this fall we couldn't wait to do it again. We'll be getting cozy with Jan Brett's new book, Cozy. So grab your hot cocoa, pop on a mask, and come and get cozy!
Organized and hosted by new business The Community Classroom Hosted by Tailored Learning Supports (For Families), the StoryWalk will be posted from December 4th-January 4th outside 24 Florence businesses. Maps will be available electronically and outside The Community Classroom (at 29 N. Maple Street )and outside High Five Books at their new location. Families will not only enjoy a charming story about fuzzy animals finding an unusual new home to survive Alaska's long winter (while learning to get along), but they will learn about several Arctic unusual animals on this 1.5 mile walk.
Sponsors include: Finck and Perras Insurance, Coopers Corner, Rick Kristek Tax, Corliss Law, High Five Books and Art Always, Collective Copies, Florence Paint and Decorating Center, Full Circle Bike Shop, and Macaroni Kid.

StoryWalk® in Downtown Florence (October 1-15, 2020)
Our education elves have something up their sleeves!
Starting on October 1, we're hosting a StoryWalk in downtown Florence! Find more information on the StoryWalk Facebook event page (and please share it on your Facebook page!).
Families will be able to scoop up a map, pop on their masks, and cruise around Florence to 20 different businesses to read A Big Mooncake for Little Star by local author/illustrator Grace Lin. Exercise, great literature, social distancing fun, AND waving at local business owners through their windows!
I hope you'll join us. Maps are available outside The Community Classroom and outside High Five Books. There will be a Raffle Chart on the back of the map for kids to fill out, and those who check off every business on the chart can enter into a raffle for a bookplate signed by Caldecott and Newberry award-winning author Grace Lin! You can access the Raffle Map here as well.
The author will also be hosting a live virtual bedtime read aloud of the book on the Tailored Learning Supports (For Families) Facebook page on October 15th at 6 pm EST, and there will be a raffle for 15 signed bookplates. Register for the read aloud here.
We'll also have coordinating activities and discussion questions for families outside The Community Classroom (29 N. Maple St).
What a fun way to celebrate The Mid-Autumn Festival, get out and support local business owners in a safe and socially-distanced way, and embrace the arrival of fall.
The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Storywalk® is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson.
